Don't Worry Darling: Release date, cast, trailer and news for Harry Styles film

And judging by the latest trailer, it seems as though Don't Worry, Darling is going to make for a claustrophobic, chilling watch.

Sure enough, Wilde has teased an intense performance from Styles (Dunkirk, Eternals) during one scene in particular in which his character Jack receives a promotion during the company gala.

"It’s a strange scene, full of fascist references, and a disturbing amount of male rage," Wilde explained to Rolling Stone. "The scene called for him to stand onstage with Frank (Chris Pine) and chant their creepy slogan, 'Whose world is it? Ours!' over and over again. Dark as hell.

"But Harry took it to another level. He was so fully in the moment, he began screaming the lines to the crowd, in this primal roar, that was way more intense than anything we expected from the scene."

She continued: "The camera operator followed him as he paced around the stage like a kind of wild animal. We were all gobsmacked at the monitor. I think even Harry was surprised by it. Those are the best moments for an actor — when you’re completely outside your body."

With a stellar cast featuring the likes of Roar's Nick Kroll, Loki's Kate Berlant, WandaVision's Asif Ali, Big Little Lies star Douglas Smith, Veep's Timothy Simons and director Olivia Wilde herself, Don't Worry, Darling is set to be one of the most exciting films of the year – although Styles himself has said that his fans would not want to watch it with their parents.

Don't Worry Darling will be released in UK cinemas on 23rd September 2022.

The film has its premiere at Venice Film Festival on Monday 5th September 2022, which is attended by director Olivia Wilde and stars Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan, and Chris Pine.

The first reviews and reactions to Don't Worry Darling are due in on the same day.

Like many productions in 2020, the thriller was forced to halt filming due to a crew member testing positive for COVID. Despite the pandemic-related delays, production resumed and filming for the project officially wrapped in February, with Pugh taking to Instagram to confirm the news – and thank the crew for working in such unpredictable circumstances.

"Despite the new on set rules, every single person delivered their A game and it’s the many long list of names like those above and in the credits at the end of movies that actually get this hard, messy, fun weird job done," she said.

Actor and comedian Asif Ali (WandaVision) also commemorated the wrap with an Instagram post featuring a picture alongside Wilde, and fellow castmates Pugh, Styles and Nick Kroll.

A full trailer for Don't Worry Darling was released on Monday 2nd May 2022.

The clip gave fans the biggest look at the film so far and showed off Florence Pugh and Harry Styles in the lead roles.

The footage teases something called "The Victory Project" which the husbands of this suburban setting appear to be keeping secrets about.

Wilde had previously premiered the trailer at CinemaCon.

Before introducing the footage, Wilde said (via Deadline) that the film is similar to "Inception, The Matrix, Truman Show. It’s my love letter to the movies that pushed boundaries of ambition.”

Wilde added that we should "imagine a life where you could have anything you ever wanted, not just the tangible things … but also the things that really matter — true love with the perfect partner, real trusted friendships. What would it take for you to give up that perfect life? What are you willing to sacrifice to do what’s right? Are you willing to dismantle the system that is designed to serve you?"

Wilde previously shared a teaser for the super stylish thriller on Twitter alongside the film's release date back in September 2021. Watch that teaser below:

A second, full-length trailer was released on 21st July, giving fans another look at Florence Pugh and Harry Styles as a happy couple living in a secluded, idyllic town that isn't quite right.

Furthermore, a clip featuring an emotionally fraught scene between Styles and Pugh was released by Warner Bros to promote the film.

As well as an intriguing premise, the film features an ensemble cast that is just as likely to draw audiences in. Oscar-nominated and general acting force of nature Florence Pugh (Little Women, Black Widow) and former One Direction member Harry Styles play Alice and Jack, a couple living in a utopian community in the '50s.

The project marks Styles's first lead role after featuring in Dunkirk, and both writer-director Olivia Wilde and co-star Chris Pine (Wonder Woman) have sung his praises.

"Harry Styles is an absolute delight. He's one of the most professional people I've ever met," Pine told ET. "Couldn't be kinder, more gracious, I mean, really, I was stunned by this kid. He's off-the-charts cool."

Wilde noted to Vogue that Styles and Pugh share some steamy scenes, commenting that she hopes audiences “realize how rarely they see female hunger, and specifically this type of female pleasure."

The article notes the scenes will like cause "hysteria" among Harry Styles' fanbase.

Styles came onboard to replace Shia LaBeouf, who departed the project earlier in the production.

"Little known fact: most male actors don’t want to play supporting roles in female-led films," Wilde posted on Instagram, before saying that Styles had "relished the opportunity" to come onboard.

Speaking about the role, Styles told press at the Venice Film Festival: "It’s fun to play in worlds that aren’t necessary your own. This world is supposedly so perfect; it was fun to play pretend in it. It’s like driving fun cars, a lot of fun stuff as well.

"We were lucky to have that world built so well around us, so we could play in reality instead of pretending everything was nice."

Meanwhile, Wilde has revealed that Chris Pine's character was actually inspired by a real-life figure.

Telling Maggie Gyllenhaal in in Interview magazine, Wilde said of Pine's "terrifying" performance: "We based that character on this insane man, Jordan Peterson, who is this pseudo-intellectual hero to the incel community."

She defined incels as: "They’re basically disenfranchised, mostly white men, who believe they are entitled to sex from women."

Wilde added: "And they believe that society has now robbed them—that the idea of feminism is working against nature, and that we must be put back into the correct place."

The cast is rounded out by Nick Kroll (Big Mouth), Gemma Chan (Eternals, Crazy Rich Asians), KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk), Asif Ali (WandaVision) and burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese.

As well as taking on directing duties, Wilde, who was best known as an actress before directing 2019's Booksmart, will also feature in a supporting role.

Booksmart writer Katie Silberman wrote the script, based on a story by Carey Van Dyke and Shane Van Dyke.

Don't Worry Darling plot

Plot details have been kept firmly under wraps, but we do know that the film focuses on Alice and Jack, a couple in the 1950s who live in a utopian community in the California desert.

But their seemingly idyllic life takes a dark turn when housewife Alice discovers a disturbing truth about her husband, who is hiding a dark secret linked to "The Victory Project".

The official synopsis reads: "Alice (Pugh) and Jack (Styles) are lucky to be living in the idealised community of Victory, the experimental company town housing the men who work for the top-secret Victory Project and their families.

"The 1950’s societal optimism espoused by their CEO, Frank (Pine)—equal parts corporate visionary and motivational life coach—anchors every aspect of daily life in the tight-knit desert utopia. While the husbands spend every day inside the Victory Project Headquarters, working on the “development of progressive materials,” their wives—including Frank’s elegant partner, Shelley (Chan)—get to spend their time enjoying the beauty, luxury and debauchery of their community.

"Life is perfect, with every resident’s needs met by the company. All they ask in return is discretion and unquestioning commitment to the Victory cause.

"But when cracks in their idyllic life begin to appear, exposing flashes of something much more sinister lurking beneath the attractive façade, Alice can’t help questioning exactly what they’re doing in Victory, and why. Just how much is Alice willing to lose to expose what’s really going on in this paradise?"
